The Belly Dance Directory

Jane Jardines is one of the few bellydancers in Australia able to make a full-time living from her art. She won the solo, group and best choreography categories at the 1st Annual National Belly Dance Competition in 2003, and has gone from strength to strength ever since.

Jane has studied and performed internationally (including in Egypt) and her performances are enriched by the variety of styles she has studied (Egyptian Raqs Al-Sharqi, Greek Ciftetelli – ancient and modern, and Turkish mix). She adds further variety with the use of props – including a live python!

Jane teaches at Dance Central in Sydney’s Surry Hills.  If you want a class that raises a sweat and improves your technique, Jane’s classes are for you!  Her Intermediate class is a good physical and mental workout for intermediate and advanced belly dancers.

Interview with belly dancer Jane

How did you get started with belly dancing?
I went to a party and saw an amazing dancer who inspired me to do lessons and never expected to have made a career out of it.

What is your favourite belly dancing style and/or prop?
I love classical Egyptian dance its so elegant and controlled.  I love my zills can’t dance without them.

Who or what has had the greatest influence on your belly dance style?
I love Dina’s style, Randa and Soraya from Egypt.

What advice would you offer an aspiring belly dancer?
It’s not as glamourfied as it looks – its hard work to sustain this career.  But the show must go on!!!  There is a lot of judgement – find the validation from within and don’t expect it from the audience.
