Amera’s Palace needs no introduction for most Australian belly dancers, having been in existence for 25 years! The studio is unique in Sydney in offering belly dance classes by a variety of teachers in a range of different styles, all in one location – an airy, mirrored 200 square metre studio in Marrickville (which is also available for hire).
Also at this location is the Amera’s Palace Boutique, an Aladdin’s Cave of costumes and accessories! The shop also operates online, and ships throughout Australia.
Originally founded by Amera Eid, these days the studio is run by drummer and dancer Ali Higson, whom many Sydneysiders will recognise as a drummer and dancer with Kush Cabaret (of which she is creative director). What’s less well-known is that she started her career as a cabaret belly dancer in Lebanese night clubs around Sydney.
The following clip about the school was filmed in 2011.
Note, bellyrobics is no longer offered, but many styles of belly dance still are!
